Born in the serene region of St Romain in Côte d'Or, William Ponsot ventured towards the iconic landscape of Morey-St-Denis in 1872, where he became the proud owner of a distinguished wine estate. His legacy was soon inherited by his nephew and godson, Hippolyte Ponsot, who upon ending his career in diplomacy, embraced the illustrious world of wine-making.

Hippolyte, aided by his brother and fellow diplomat, Henri Ponsot, significantly expanded the reach of Clos de la Roche. This was achieved by an astute acquisition of ¾ of the esteemed "Clos de la Roche" lieu-dit in the year 1920.

In a ground-breaking move during 1932, Hippolyte initiated the practice of in-house bottling of the estate's entire grape harvest. This marked an unprecedented event in the wine-crafting era of that time, with such practices only evident amongst a scant dozen of Burgundy wine estates before the onset of World War II.

Their first celebrated vintage was produced in the year of 1934, and this was the first to be introduced to the French market. It also achieved international acclaim with exports to the United States and other European countries.

In the present day, this esteemed estate still thrives under the diligent care of the Ponsot family, with Laurent, Rose-Marie, Catherine and Stéphanie Ponsot presiding as custodians over the estate's various entities. The epitome of family enterprise, the Ponsot wine estate continues its legacy of producing exceptional, hand-crafted wines, savoured and appreciated worldwide.
